History of Southfield Alumnae Chapter

The Southfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (SAC) was chartered on November 17, 1984. Due to the vision and efforts of 31 women, SAC became the 738th chapter of our Grand Chapter, the first African-American Greek letter organization to be established in the city of Southfield, Michigan, and one of the city’s first African-American women’s organizations. Today, SAC has more than 400 members.

The chapter is proud of its Tutorial Program, which was established in 1985 and serves Southfield-area students. The chapter sponsors youth enrichment programs including the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and Delta GEMS, which assist young people with service projects and academic enrichment while promoting scholarship and cultural endeavors. SAC also sponsors EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence), a collaborative program that focuses on the plight of African-American males. Additionally, the chapter supports the Torch of Wisdom Foundation, Inc. and the scholarship-based Cotillion Ball.

Throughout each year, SAC holds economic symposiums, political candidate forums, domestic & sexual violence awareness forums, health awareness clinics and other programs that address issues pertaining to women and minorities. The chapter is also regularly involved in voter registration drives, and programs that feed the homeless, assist children’s shelters, and support seniors who reside in nursing homes.

As SAC continues its work in the community, the chapter believes in forming a coalition with other organizations to address the plight of those negatively impacted by economic and social ills.

SAC is proud to serve the Southfield, Berkley, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, Birmingham, Clawson, Farmington, Farmington Hills, Ferndale, Franklin, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Madison Heights, Northville (Oakland County), Novi, Oak Park,Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Royal Oak Township, South Lyon, Milford, and Wixom communities.
